What is PBIS?
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral support systems that is needed for ALL students to achieve social, emotional, and academic success. This requires a multi-tiered approach to support students at the primary (school-wide), secondary (classroom), and tertiary (individual) levels as students have need.
Getting to the Root of the Problem
Providing social/emotional supports is not easy. Often, you don’t realize there is a problem until an incident occurs. Unfortunately, by this time, it is almost too late to do anything, as traditional approaches to problems like bullying are often ineffective.
So what’s the solution? You need to treat the symptom, not the disease.
Bullying, suspensions, etc. are all manifestations of a larger issue – a lack of social/emotional skills. Research has proven that by assessing and developing social emotional skills, you’ll achieve results like:
- Greater social skills
- Less emotional distress
- Better attitudes
- Fewer conduct problems (i.e. bullying, suspensions, etc.)
- More frequent positive behaviors
- Improved grades and standardized test scores by 11 percentile points
Focusing on social/emotional learning (SEL) has far-reaching benefits, but in order to be effective it must be targeted for the individual. One size does not fit all, so it’s important that each SEL development plan be custom-fitted to the needs of the individual if we really want our PBIS plan to have the desired impact on student culture that we’re looking for.
How do you provide the individual supports that each student needs to be successful in an efficient manner? Each student is unique, as are their social/emotional needs. Data-based decision making Is difficult to do on a large scale without technology-based tools to support your evidence-based practices. Sign up for our free trial below to learn more.
We offer a free PBIS webinar which teaches key skills to focus on to eliminate bad behaviors and ensure a positive learning environment, how to incorporate SEL to improve academics and bad behaviors, and evidence-based tools to assess and teach these in your classroom.
