What is Personal Responsibility?

We are responsible for our own lives. This idea is at the very heart of personal responsibility. Personal responsibility is the level of commitment people are willing to make in setting clear goals and taking full responsibility to achieve them. It is the last scale in our Personal Responsibility Map, which is the core assessment of our goal setting and self-determination program. The Personal Responsibility Scale encompasses all of the other areas. Combining the other eleven scales equals personal responsibility.

PBIS and Personal Responsibility

PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) is a term used to describe the proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports needed for students to achieve social, emotional, and academic success. PBIS brings together the worlds of academic instruction and behavioral intervention. It focuses on every students individual ability to set academic, career, and life goals and take full responsibility for achieving those goals. Without personal goals, such basic success skills as commitment, drive strength/motivation and time management do not exist.

The Eleven Aspects of Personal Responsibility

The entire assessment and skill intervention program on personal responsibility covers eleven core skills related to personal responsibility. They are broken into three areas:

1. Goal achievement potential
2. Self-management related to personal responsibility
3. Personal responsibility

Goal achievement potential includes the following scales:

  • Goal setting
  • Self-efficacy
  • Values congruence
  • Achievement drive
  • Self-esteem

Self-management related to personal responsibility includes the following scales:

  • Self-control
  • Self-management
  • Problem solving
  • Resiliency
  • Self-improvement

As noted above, Personal Responsibility encompasses all of these scales. Someone that has a high degree of Personal Responsibility will have high achievement on all or most of these scales.
