Career and technology education programs are struggling throughout the country. A lack of funding is one issue and the second is a lack of connection to the standards-based system created by No Child Left Behind. The Career and Technology Education Act has now mandated the development of services and activities that integrate rigorous and challenging academic and technical education and that link secondary education with post-secondary education for a participating career and technical education students. This new focus presents new challenges for all career and technical education instructors. As if this isn’t enough, the Act requires all curriculum to be connected to challenging academic content and achievement standards under No Child Left Behind. The Learning Assessment Programs (LAPs) are a system of academic assessments related to successful performance in a career and technical education program and are correlated to all 50 state content standards. The LAPs are part of our MECA System (Microcomputer Evaluation of Careers and Academics). The MECA System is a technology-based career exploration and assessment program.
