The Conover Company

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is a learned ability to identify, experience, understand, and express human emotions in healthy and productive ways. Emotional intelligence skills are primary factors of motivation and the gateway to lifelong learning and high levels of achievement and success. The Emotional Intelligence Profile centers on the following beliefs:

EQ is the most important variable in physical health, personal achievement, and career success.
EQ is a learned ability.
There have been few, if any, practical and systematic opportunities to learn EQ.
EQ requires an intentional learning process that is personally meaningful.
EQ consists of specific skills that can be easily assessed, taught, and learned.

The foundation and instructional frameworks of The Emotional Intelligence Profile are based on the research and work of Dr. Darwin Nelson and Dr. Gary Low. For over 25 years they have studied, researched, and worked with the emotional and personal skills essential for achievement, career success, and a healthy orientation to life. The Personal Skills Map® is the center of their research and of The Emotional Intelligence Profile.

The purpose of this profile is to help individuals learn how to identify, understand, and develop their emotional intelligence. The Emotional Intelligence Profile consists of two components: Assessment and Skill Enhancement.

Assessment and Skill Enhancement

The assessment component consists of the following scales:

Interpersonal Assertion–this scale indicates how effectively individuals use direct, honest, and appropriate expression of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors when dealing with others. It indicates the degree to which one is able to be direct and honest in communicating with others without violating their rights.

Self-Esteem
Interpersonal Assertion
Interpersonal Awareness
Empathy
Drive Strength/Motivation
Decision Making
Time Management
Sales Orientation/Leadership
Commitment Ethic
Stress Management
Physical Wellness

In this pattern, note how Personal Change Orientation is high and how Self-Esteem, Stress Management, and Physical Wellness are low. Also note that Drive Strength, Sales Orientation, and Commitment Ethic are high. This individual is not accustomed to having low Self-Esteem. The low Stress Management and Physical Wellness scales indicate recent and unusual events in this person’s life. Changes have taken place for this person recently, and something must be done soon to either correct or cope with the changes. If not dealt with, burnout or catastrophic decision making could result from the situation. This person needs to acknowledge the stressors with the help of a peer, a parent, a teacher, a pastor, a boss, a friend, or a family member, so that the situation can be consciously dealt with before it gets any worse. This individual does not have experience coping. A typical cause of this stress might be that a new authority figure has come on the scene.

After the assessment, appropriate skill enhancements are assigned. Each skill enhancement module consists of approximately 3-4 hours of interactive, learning activities, listening activities, and post assessments.
