Personal-Responsibility

The focus of this last blog in our series of twelve is on personal responsibility.  The Personal Responsibility Scale is the last scale in our Personal Responsibility Map, which is the core assessment in our Personal Responsibility—Achieving Academic and Career Goals program. It is the last scale in the assessment for a good reason. The Personal Responsibility Scale is actually a scale that encompasses all of the other eleven scales. When you combine the other eleven scales in the assessment, it equals personal responsibility.

Personal responsibility is the level of commitment or promise people are willing to make in setting clear goals and then taking full responsibility to achieve them.

MTSS and Personal Responsibility

Multi-Tiered System of Supports, or MTSS, is a term used to describe an evidence-based model of schooling that uses data-based problem solving to integrate academic and behavioral instructions and intervention (Florida’s MTSS Project). This definition brings together the worlds of academic instruction and behavioral intervention. The MTSS process, if done with fidelity, would focus on each and every learner’s ability to set personal academic, career and life goals and take full responsibility for achieving those goals. Without personal goals, such basic success skills as commitment, drive strength/motivation and time management do not exist. Without a goal, to what should a student commit? Without a goal, how can a student be motivated to achieve? Without a goal, why would students want to manage their time?

We now have over 30 years of research on the Personal Skills Map®, a core assessment in our Success Profiler program, and on our Personal Responsibility Map®. This research documents student retention and academic excellence when students possess the core skills of commitment, motivation and time management. (See our recent blogs on 3 Critical Social/Emotional Skills that Impact Academic Performance and Student Retention and Improving Retention Using The Success Profiler®)

Our philosophy is not best expressed in words, it is expressed in the choices we make. In the long run we shape our lives and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die and the choices we make are ultimately our responsibility.

Eleven Aspects of Personal Responsibility

This is the heart of it. The entire assessment and skill intervention program on personal responsibility covers eleven core skills related to personal responsibility. They are broken into three areas:

  1. Goal achievement potential
  2. Self-management related to personal responsibility
  3. Personal responsibility

Goal achievement potential includes the following scales:

  • Goal setting
  • Self-efficacy
  • Values congruence
  • Achievement drive
  • Self-esteem

The self-management related to personal responsibility scales are:

  • Self-control
  • Self-management
  • Problem solving
  • Resiliency
  • Self-improvement

And finally, the most important scale:

  • Personal responsibility
